Divided Nations is a project that aims to highlight the importance of connection. Set on a staircase, it plays with the idea of individualism and collectivism. If you stand at one level, near one player, they become amplified, yet when you step back, you hear all the musicians as a whole.
The project was very much a global collaboration. Working with 5 composers, from Iran, Lebanon, Sweden, France, and the USA, the show explores themes of mutual tolerance, alienation in a digital age, the struggles of keeping Kalymak culture alive, a sonic representation of the different ethnic groups living within Lebanon (using Middle Eastern Maqam Music), and lived expereince of how dictators atomise communities to take power.
